New Books from Kawade

New Books from Kawade

On October 15, 2024, the Japanese publisher Kawade Shoba Shinsha, released Tasha's five calico books in Japanese. The titles are Pumpkin Moonshine, Alexander the Gander, The County Fair, Dorcas Porkus, and Linsey Woolsey.

Tasha Tudor's Original Calico Books

Oxford University Press published the first calico book, Pumpkin Moonshine in 1938. It remains in print in English to this day and is available on our website in several formats.  When Tasha first created Pumpkin Moonshine, she bound it in blue fabric with white polka-dots. Calico fabric is typically 100% cotton, undyed. How the terms came to be related to her book bindings, we are not sure. Oxford Press carried the design through to the published book, and eventually to the other four titles as well.

The new books were released in a boxed set. Translation to Japanese provided by Tudor family colleague Masako Meshino. These books are slightly larger than the original calico books at 11cm tall and 14.5 cm tall.

Books are available for purchase in Japan.
