  • Animal Neighbors

    Winslow Tudor
    June 16, 2011

A short distance beyond the stone terrace in front of Tasha’s house where the land tilts south and the jewelweed and nettle possess the ground between lawn and woods, a population of creatures surprising in variety has taken up residence. A doe and her fawn wait out the heat of the day in the shade where the moss grows, along with several porcupines. The porcupines make their appearance at dusk, generally near the crown of the pear trees where the leaves are especially to their liking, or else in the raspberry patch where this year’s canes are on the menu. It is harder to keep porcupines out of a garden than deer.

  • Autumn Greetings

    October 20, 2011
The path to Tasha Tudor's house...the field has been mown and laid to rest for the year.

We have arrived at the middle of Autumn. We've been drinking apple cider by the bucket full, admiring the foliage on bright sunny days and misty foggy days, and relishing the opportunity to wear our shawls and wellies again. We were all sure to layer up for our September 29th Corgi Cottage Tours. It was a cold & rainy day, but we all had a wonderful time.

  • Between Seasons

    Winslow
    December 3, 2010

Between autumn and winter there is often a type of weather that lasts a few hours or as much as several days. This pause between the seasons often accompanies the big storms that spin off the Atlantic and bring snow, or rain, or wind, and often all three.

  • Building & Using Cold Frames Booklet

Have you always been intrigued with the idea of a cold frame, but weren't quite sure how to build or use one? This Storey booklet has all of the information you need to learn.

"Imagine your Thanksgiving table graced with a beautiful salad of crisp baby lettuce, tangy onions, crunchy radishes, and your very own tomatoes. While this may sound like the norther gardener's fondest fantasy, you can make it come true through the use of a simple, inexpensive cold frame.

A cold frame is nothing more than a box of boards set on the ground outdoors and topped with a second-hand storm window, but its simplicity belies its usefulness. With a cold frame, you can stretch the growing season for salad greens up to three months in short-season areas."
